Work away trips

Mike Ball Spoil Sport trip.
I got back on Wednesday after two weeks volunteering on a dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef, so thought I’d share some thoughts on the experience as well as some photos. The boat is called Spoilsport, owned by Mike Ball Dive Expeditions and it is one of the very few that is licensed to go out in search of the Minke whales that are in the area at this time of year. It also visits Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, famous for its big walls, clear water and Pelagics cruising the blue. I’ve gotta say that the diving was some of the best I’ve ever done. I got to spend a total of more than five hours in the water with the inquisitive Minke whales, which sometimes passed by close enough to reach out and touch.

This was truly an awe inspiring experience and paired with the superb diving in the Ribbon and Osprey Reefs made for an unbelievable two weeks of diving. The trip consisted of two week long charters departing from Cairns, but it is possible for guests to do three or four day trips departing from Lizard Island. The first and second days were where the Minke encounters were, at times with more than eight in the water at one time. We then headed out to Osprey Reef, where we saw Manta Rays, Marlin and even a Whale Shark.  This is where they conducted the Shark feeding dive where we saw Hammerheads, White and Silver tips and Grey Reef sharks. After some awesome wall dives, we headed back to the Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole to finish off the trip. This trip would usually be worth at least $5,500, but as a recently certified Divemaster I was able to take advantage of the work away option that is included in some Divemaster / Instructor Traineeships. It is an excellent way to gain experience in the industry and get an insight into how a liveaboard operation works, as well as logging a bunch of dives along the way.
